A Glimpse into GoGeekGirl’s WonderCon 2015 Day One

WonderCon 2015A Glimpse into GoGeekGirl’s WonderCon 2015 Day One

It’s amazing how much I miss the vibe, the people, everything of being at a WonderCon. Even before the doors opened, just sitting outside people watching I already felt the calm, the happiness washing over me. Seeing so many people all there because we have something in common, some geekiness, some fandom, some art, something in common rather than being focused on all of our differences. That does not mean that you won’t hear the heated debates about who is the better superhero Batman or Superman. Or which artist is better? Which writer? But these aren’t done in a mean spirited way, they are done with passion for the fandom that each loves and that love is exactly what makes these debates so much a part of the good fun.

HacktivistToday was about stopping by to say hello to a few of the people I have had the good fortune to get to know over the years, and even to meet in person a few of those I have only exchanged emails with or spoken on the with. One of the benefits of making the rounds to say hi is that I get to share this little tidbit with you.  If you enjoyed Hacktivist from Archaia Entertainment and Alyssa Milano, then you will be happy to hear that Hacktivist volume 2 is rumored to be coming our way this summer. Considering who  heard this from I would put my money on it being true.

Joel DouekThis quick round of hellos was cut short as it was time to hi the “Star Trek: They’re Not Really Dead As Long As We Remember Them” panel, only to run into the moderators of the 2nd panel I was planning on attending. This resulted in my missing the Star Trek panel to catch up a bit and then to take some photos prior to the “Drawing Notes: Inside the Music of Animation” panel, as well as some kidding around as evidenced by the pretzelmiester aka Joel Douek. Anne Cecere, BMI director of film & TV relations along with Chandler Poling, president of Krakower Poling PR, have been bringing these composer panels to San Diego Comic Con and WonderCon for five years and they have yet to disappoint. This year they brought us Joel Douek (Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokéman), Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McCuistion and Kristopher Carter (Justice League, Avenges Assemble). Though I could try to tell you all about it here but I think that panel deserves a story all it’s own.  If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of the panels this team puts on, I highly recommend doing so. You don’t need to be a musician or a composer to appreciate them, I’m not. All you need is to appreciate the music that is part of the Movies, Television Shows and even Video Games that may be part of your life. The stories that the various composers have shared over the years bring a different appreciation to the things you are already enjoying. You may even find yourself tuning out what is happening on the screen so that you can appreciate the music that is part of the storytelling that is often overlooked.

After taking a breather to process some of the conversations I had pre and post the composer panel it was time to head back in for “The Most Dangerous Women at WonderCon: The Good, the Bad, and the Deadly” panel. Ran into two of my closest friends on the way in, not surprised as I know they have attended this panel at prior cons.  This was my first time being able to catch this panel and I now regret the prior missed opportunities. The panelists consisted of; Katrina Hill (Action Movie Freak), Devin Grayson (Catwoman, Black Widow), Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Jessica Merizan (Heroes of Cosplay, PizzaAndPorn), Patty Jean Robinson (Pike and Trident), Dr. Janina Scarlet (Superhero Therapy), Victoria Schmidt (Scruffy Rebel), Patricia Tallman (actor, Creating Badassery for Women Over 50) and Janey Tracey (OuterPlaces.com) were obviously enjoying themselves as the discussion of the best and baddest of female villains, the ones we love and the ones we wish we would see more of. But as with the composer panel there is to much to share about this one to do it in a quick update about the day.

After another quick trip to the floor it was actually time for me to head to the hotel so that I could get some of my thoughts down while they were still fresh, which I am doing as I enjoy dinner and a drink by the pool, and then it is time to prep for tomorrow and the possibility of a few interviews being added to my schedule.

I promise there will be more about both panels as well as many more photos from WonderCon 2015 day one.

If you are here tomorrow you should check out not only the fun out on the floor, or the people viewing both inside and outside the convention center, but make time to hit some of the panels. Not only do these give your feet a break but you can often find something interesting discussed that you may not have considered before.

And if you are here Sunday, please be sure to attend the “End Bullying! Responding to Cruelty in Our Culture” panel. Having attended this panel at prior cons I must say it was not what I expected, it was definitely much more than I expected and I hope to see many of you there.
