Today I have had hours to ponder what to do regarding falling in with everybody else yesterday and believing that Apple was the bad guy. What am I talking about? Yesterday believing what I was seeing online regarding Apple supposedly banning Saga #12 from being available for purchase through the ComiXology app on iOS devices I posted Saga #12 Banned by Apple, Why? I had several choices today.
- Pretend I never posted anything and keep quiet.
- Delete the post.
- Edit the post to remove the references to the ban
- Edit the post to include this retraction (oh wait I will edit it to add a link to this)
- Publish this article
I’ve obviously chosen to publish this and eat my Apple Flavored Crow for falling in with the crowd so easily. How do I know I have some crow to eat? This morning the following letter from from David Steinberger, CEO and co-founder of comiXology was published on their site taking many by surprise.
Wait! What? Apple wasn’t being rotten? They didn’t ban the book? Are we in an alternate reality? No we are in the same universe, the same reality, we all just fell for believing the worst of Apple because of other decisions that the company may have made in the past.
What I find disappointing is that it appears that they sat back and allowed everybody to believe that it was Apple banning the comic, when in this instance that was not the case. Now, to be fair, who knows what would have occurred if ComiXology had submitted Saga #12 for inclusion. It is possible that Apple may have banned it. We will never know. After the uproar on social media and various sites Apple might have been influenced to show they aren’t the rotten apple they were being accused of being.
Based on the comments posted to the letter from Steinberger I am not alone in this disappointment. Below are just a few of the comments.
And having just confirmed with one of the sources I trusted, it seems they believed what they were publishing yesterday was the truth as well. No I can’t say who it was, but at least I no longer feel betrayed for having trusted their information when choosing to write my story yesterday.
The important thing for me to say is: I have nobody to blame but myself for falling in with the crowd and accusing Apple of being the bad guy in this drama. For that I apologize to Apple and to my readers. Know that next time my gut tells me something seems a little off about the story I will dig deeper before believing what I am being told or reading. Yes I had a gut feeling I was missing something and sadly I had ignored that because it was easier to believe what was being said about Apple.
