In May I took some time to relax while also challenge myself to capture the site of the gliders at the Torrey Pines Glider Port here in San Diego. Watching as one after another stepped (or leapt) off the edge of the cliff to let their gliders carry them on the currents above the ocean was breath-taking. Watching them held the same thrill for me as watching a bird of prey soaring on the thermals.
Capturing shots of the gliders was an exercise in tracking and framing, something that I don’t do as much of when taking images of stationary objects. Definitely more challenging than tracking a person that is walking at a con, there you can predict the speed and direction they may go. With a glider it is more difficult, especially when your feet are firmly planted on the ground while they are soaring on thermals and winds that you can’t see or feel. I miss challenging myself this way, I used to do this with jet skiers that were doing stunts out on the water.
But my words won’t do just to this instead here are a few of the shots taken of the gliders that gorgeous May day. [Somehow I managed to overlook this folder of photos over the summer months]
