“OUTBREAK,” Part One
Dr. David Loren used to worry about the deadly consequences of his creations from the safety of his laboratory… but now he’s been deployed to Taiwan to oversee a field test gone awry. Will having the mysterious SEAL Team 6 as his bodyguards be enough to ensure that David returns home alive?
Dr. David Loren is having to not only face the consequence of his creations, he is having to do it in a way he has never had to before, in the field. Far from what had become dubious safety of his lab, Loren is now going to be put to a test he never imagined even in his worst nightmares.
Matt Hawkins continues to throw Loren into situations that make him dig deep inside to find what he really is made of. While at first glance one might assume that Think Tank is a military book, or a science book, one would be mistaken. Those are just the tools to force the the inner searchings of a character that has spent to much of his life as a spoiled little boy genius. And as he is forced to face the consequences of his creations and his actions he is growing up in a very dramatic and rapid manner.
If you have ever watched the movie Real Genius, this is the Chris Knight character at his best, but tested in ways that Knight never was in the movie. Why this reference? I watched the movie again the other night and as soon as Chris Knight steps into the scene all I could think was… there is Dr. David Loren.
I am running out of adjectives to describe Rahsan Ekedal’s art on this series. Each issue it is better and more dramatic than the last. His style lends itself amazingly well to this issue, adding drama to scenes where words alone would not do. His skill at differentiating characters, making each their own, whether as a leading or supporting role. No color, just the skill of his styling to give each their own appearance becomes even more noticeable when confronted with what would obviously be easier to portray as simply a generic SEAL. His skill at body language and facial expressions heightens the drama of the scenes. And none of this diminishes his skills with the technology in the scenes.
There is so much I am dying to say about this issue but that would be spoilers sweetie (oops wrong series) and we all know that I don’t do spoilers. So do yourself (and me too) a favor. Hurry up and read this issue so I don’t have to keep biting my tongue about some of the amazing scenes.
And what I really want to know is… What happens next?
Oh and if you have read this issue you know what I am talking about, so don’t you think it is time to get your friends all reading this series? You know how amazing it is so why keep it to yourself?
Side note, the t-shirt that Loren is wearing in cover A, well Top Cow was selling those at SDCC so don’t be surprised if you run into somebody wearing one.
Final score… you guessed it still holding at a perfect 10/10 (OK how about a 10+++ for well you will have to read it to find out why) and still topping my MUST READ list.
