SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COMICS HOSTS BLOWOUT PARTY FOR ANNUAL FREE COMIC BOOK DAY EVENT

FREE COMICS FOR ALL ON THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY

Saturday, May 2nd 2015 marks the annual Free Comic Book Day event for the comic industry and Southern California Comics will host a spectacular party for all attendees. This is a free event open to all ages and everyone is welcomed to attend. This event will feature free comics for all participants, a major store-wide sale, toy and collectible vendors, and an incredible team of celebrity comic book artists making appearances. Festivities will begin at 9am and last through 5pm. We estimated our attendance at the 2014 event at over 2000 people. We expect more than that this year.

Free Comic Book Day was initiated in 2002 to capture the interest of younger generations of readers and to reinvigorate the love of comics in established readers. This international event has proven successful as every year more and more shops are participating and publishers and artists are promoting their contributions. Southern California Comics has been a proud supporter of Free Comic Book Day participating since year one! The first Saturday in May is always a special day for the local shop as the public interest in comics expands.

Southern California Comics has been in business in San Diego since 1997. Starting out in one room, this local business has thrived and now occupies over four warehouse suites. This comic book shop is one of the largest in San Diego and boasts an extensive collection of vintage comics and prized collectibles. Owner Jamie Newbold is a proud supporter of Free Comic Book Day and encourages new readers by furnishing the free comics to be given away with his own inventory. “Getting the attention of readers of all ages is important. Comics are always valuable for their dynamic art and link to literacy.”

Each year we showcase extraordinary items pertaining to the comic collecting hobby to entice and pique the interest of our customers. This year we are going for the jugular with some truly exotic comic books. We’ll be featuring seven copies of what is considered the Holy Grail of Baby Boomer collectible comics-Amazing Fantasy #15—the first appearance of Spider-Man! Released in 1962 and penned by Stan Lee the seven copies have a retail value in excess of $75,000! Great visual sources of wonderment and awe!

Last year we cross-promoted FCBD with SOCIETE BREWING, the popular brew tasting room at the entry to our business complex. This year we will be sharing customers with them again. Bring a FCBD comic to Societe and get a buck off a beer! How cool is that?! They will open at 11:00 for our event. We will open at 9:00 for our event. We will host a BBQ food truck and a shaved-ice truck.

This year we will feature cosplayers and a Batmobile! Yes, Batman and his car(based upon the Michael Keaton version) will be present for photos. Spider-Man and Spider Gwen in full costume, too. Perhaps even Star Wars Storm Troopers will be here.

The local band Digital Lizards Of Doom will be playing at our event. DLOD are a nerdist rock group renowned for playing it up onstage in crazy costumes holding light-sabre battles while rocking the audience at such places as the House Of Blues!

We are putting together a list of local, celebrity comic people for autographs, sketches and comics. The list starts with Oliver Nome, Batton Lash, Mark Irwin, Chad Cavanaugh, Jeff Slemons, Lee Kohse, Rob Hughes, Lance Hann-Rogue, Leonardo Pertuzzatti and perhaps more.
