“TWISTED TALES OF HOPE!”
On the verge of adolescence, Jackie’s daughter Hope is following in her father’s footsteps and is starting to grow into the young lady that she was always destined to become. But there is Darkness in her blood. And when she wanders into the woods alone, surrounded by things that go bump in the night, Hope wonders if she is the creature to actually fear.
It would seem that David Hine was channeling his inner pre-adolescent girl with this issue. Not only does he capture Hope’s twisted intelligence but he manages to temper this with behavior that would be typical of individuals of her age. What behavior is that? You know, the doing something that they know they shouldn’t do. And when does she chose to do this? As Daddy’s world continues to fracture.
Jeremy Haun continues to deliver dark and twisted art to bring Hine’s story to ‘life’. Not sure I enjoyed a much better look at one of Hope’s kittens though they clearly are made of Darkness. Must be my ‘reward’ for enjoying the dark and twisted work of Hine and Haun. Personally I need my kittens to be cute and cuddly (no no no Hope’s kittens do not qualify.)
John Rauch has put together the perfect color pallet in this series to keep Haun’s art in the dark and twisted realm. This issue is no different, from the almost mystical magical greens as Hope works with her powers early in the story, to the blues and violets of Jackie’s cellar prison, even blood is dark not a bright vibrant red. The color tones do just what they are intended to do, reinforce the darkness of the tale.
If you enjoy your tales dark and twisted and you aren’t reading The Darkness, you should be. As a reminder to the reader, don’t forget my nickname for the team working on The Darkness… Team Sick and Twisted (occasionally Team Dark and Twisted)… Team Sick and Twisted does not write, light and fluffy. That is as close to a spoiler as I will get so you have been warned!
Final Score for story and art 9/10
