One of the wonderful parts about Free Comic Book Day is the opportunity to check out some books you might not normally pick up. This was one such book. From the cover alone I might not have picked up the book. That’s not to say that it is not a good cover, it’s just not one that would have made ME pick it up.
As somebody that enjoys a well written Steampunk story, Comics, and Oz this book is a fantastic fit. Though reading it after a long Free Comic Book Day, when I was tired and thus not truly thinking about the Oz part of the tale I loved the appearance of ______ oops that would be a spoiler. Let’s just say that I gasped and uttered the words _________ oops again that would be a spoiler. Let’s just say it was a thrilled surprised reaction.
The art and coloring did a fantastic job of conveying the setting. Many panels are tones of brown or a grayish-green, and rather than make it dark and dreary it simply works. Bright and colorful are reserved for the few scenes that they belong in so there is a clear definition between settings.
Well done, and I know when the next issue comes out I will definitely be checking to see if the book holds up as well once it is not free (my money is on YES).
Final Score: 8/10
