“Jack Kurtzberg is a successful writer of young witch romance bestsellers… and he hates it so much. Suffering from writer’s block, he decides to move back to his hometown, not knowing that his new neighbours are witches, the kind of demon worshippers that would kill anyone who could disturb their dominion in Westwood.”
Sometimes you just have to take a chance and pick up a book from a team and company you aren’t familiar with. That’s just what I did this week as it was a slow week for the books I normally buy.
El Torres has crafted an interesting, if dark, tale mixing the everyday with the supernatural. The art is dark and gritty. And though touted as horror, which is not my normal choice of genre’s, I thoroughly enjoyed the tale being spun. The issue is rated mature which is most likely more for themes than for anything over the top. But if this were a television show or movie I can easily see how certain scenes could also end up much more gruesome and scary. Torres’ description of Jack Kurtberg’s reaction to his bestseller was priceless, wonder if that is how some authors feel about their work when it is garners a huge fan following while not having been something they had ever intended to create.
Abel García manages to take you from scenes from the main character’s novel to scenes being experienced by the characters of Torres’ tale with shifts of color tone. At first glance, before reading this issue, I was a bit amused by the book going back and forth in color tones. But upon reading the book it makes perfect sense and helps keep the reader in the correct space and mood. Amazingly he manages to seamlessly blend beautiful characters with dark and macabre scenes.
I look forward to seeing where this team takes the story and have to say am grateful that Morgan at Superheroes in Training had read this by the time I stopped in to pick up my books. Never hurts to have some feedback from the shop on an unknown title before picking it up. Keep it up Amigo Comics, I know I will have to check out other books from you in the future.
