A PRE-APOCALYPTIC TALE OF SURVIVAL AT ANY COST.The men and women of Safe Haven have been preparing for any-and-all end of world scenarios for years. However, their bunkers, weapons and training can’t save them from the one threat they never could have expected: Their own children.
Having heard the premise for this book a couple months ago I was intrigued. We see so many Post-Apocalyptic tales and movies, but so few pre-apocalyptic that I was curious how they would handle the story. After-all we aren’t talking about reacting to and trying to survive something that’s happened. This is the other side of the coin, the segment of society that so many look at as the kooks, the conspiracy nuts, the cults and worse. As this segment doesn’t trust others, could Ed Brisson and Johnnie Christmas create a tale that drew the reader in? Grasped the reader and had them turning the pages devouring the tale until groaning they realize there isn’t another page to turn until the next issue comes out.
Never having read anything by Brisson before I didn’t know what to expect. Will be keeping my out for other work by Brisson as the pace of this issue builds the story perfectly. Fast enough to keep the reader engaged, but not so fast that you are lost and unclear of what is happening. Not to say that he gives away the tale, no indeed he does not. He has you turning the page wanting to know what is happening and even when you have already read the solicit text you forget about it as you get lost in the story that is developing panel by panel, page by page. Now Brisson does not accomplish this alone of course. After all this isn’t a novel. This story is also being conveyed by the art of Christmas which is perfectly paired with Brisson’s writing to set the tone and feel of this pre-apocalyptic tale.
Can we have issue now? I would love to see where this team will take this tale. So if you want something a bit different, a bit dark, then this is a book you should pick up.
Final Score: 7/10
